Coming Back To Life

Where were you

When I was burned and broken?

While the days slipped by

From my window watching…

And where were you

When I was hurt and I was helpless?

Cause the things you say and the things you do

Surround me.

While you were hanging yourself on someone else’s words,

Dying to believe in what you heard,

I was staring straight into the shining sun.

Lost in thought

And lost in time,

While the seeds of LIFE and the seeds of CHANGE were planted…

Outside the rain fell dark and slow,

While I pondered on this dangerous

But irresistible pastime:

I took a heavenly ride through our silence

I knew the moment had arrived

For killing the Past

And coming back to

Life.

I took a heavenly ride through our silence

I knew the waiting had begun

Head straight…

Into the shining sun!

#Episode 4: Sounding Out The City

Sound both colonises the listener and actively recreates and reconfigures the spaces of experience. Through the power of a privatised sound world, the world becomes intimate, known and possessed” (Bull 2007: 47)

During my Masters, I learnt how meanings are created and incorporated in our everyday.

Through all the media and the senses, including the auditory experience.

In order to explore São Paulo, I have decided to switch my iPod on.

There was a specific aim: to surround the new scenes and places with music.

When I was back to Brasília, after the UK Season, that great friend showed me the next chapter of Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”.

This was my soundscape #1 in Britain.

Gustavo introduced me to “A Division Bell”.

All the surrealistic songs of this album shaped my original pathway in São Paulo.

From “Cluster One”, next to Rodolfo’s house, to “High Hopes”, close to Itaim, there used to be an hour and half of passionate rock.

But my ears were not only enchanted by British sounds, but also by Brazilian voices.

Such as Adriana Calcanhotto’s and her 1998 song “Asas” (Wings).

It was the perfect rhythm for my trajectory along Avenida Paulista, the most stunning and well-known postcard of São Paulo, in the highest point of the city.

After I learnt how to fly, with Pink Floyd in Britain, I was discovering how to master the power of my wings, with Calcanhotto in Brazil.

By sounding out the city, I was signifying that unknown reality, naming it, rendering it bearable and beautiful.

After all, my new life was just beginning.

With Gilmour’s electric guitar, Calcanhotto’s lyrics and the sound of my steps.
